Spaces for Art: The Art Block Edition
11 June | 9:30 - 11:30 AM | Colaba
Join AWM on our first, in-person, edit of Spaces for Art, a walking tour that revisits & reveals the space(s) behind the modern & contemporary art movements in Mumbai. We start in Rampart Row in the mid-20th century with the beginnings of modern art making and display in a newly independent, post-colonial city.
We “visit” spaces that have disappeared, fallen out of use or bravely continue to stay current: an artists’ centre, restaurants that became creative addas and new galleries for a young country. Our walk then ends inside the CSMVS, the 21st century city's premier museum showcasing historical artefacts, prints and paintings - sometimes, crucially, in conversation with contemporary artworks!
Art at (not just) a mall
25 June | 10 - 11:30 AM | Bandra Kurla Complex
Where is the space for art in a city constantly grappling for a foothold? Can art in public spaces provoke conversation, shake loose history or maybe even just make you smile?
Join us for an engaging tour of the Maker Maxity and Jio World Drive complex, which continues to surprise us for the sheer scale and range of public art works on display. Delve into the history of the area, 11 diverse artistic practices on view and maybe even discover new stories about BKC.
Behind the scenes: TIFR Art Collection
15 July | 11 - 1 PM | Colaba
This is THE behind the scenes you've been waiting for! Join us on a private walk through one the city's greatest cultural treasures: the art collection of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). You may know it as a renowned centre for fundamental research and learning but we love it for the art that lines its corridors and dots its offices! The brainchild of Dr Homi Bhabha, the Institute's founder, this unparalleled collection richly represents the rising stars of the post-Independence era, including rare, unseen works by the Bombay Progressive Artists and others like Nasreen Mohamedi and Nalini Malini. Bhabha, and his successor M G K Menon, saw the art collection as an opportunity to support and showcase the very best of contemporary art in a newly independent India. Join us, and the chief archivist of the TIFR, to explore one of the best, and best kept secret, art collections in the city!

Studio Visit: Teja Gavankar & Pratap Morey
25 Sept 2022 | Borivali (E)
We know the hike out to Borivali can feel like a safari, with the Sanjay Gandhi National Park right there! So we thought we’d make a fun, day-long trip of it, to visit and interact with remarkable artists Teja Gavankar and Pratap Morey in their studios. Two artists who look at the city and its built environment through completely different perspectives and engage with diverse materials. We’ve long admired Teja’s brick manipulations, her ability to transform everyday materials into seemingly organic, sculptural visions. On the other hand, Pratap’s fascination with the changing landscape of Mumbai led to arresting architectural drawings and collages of the contemporary world we inhabit but don’t really see.

Decoding Indian Art
17 Sept 2022 | Colaba
Ever stood in front of a work of art and wondered “What am I looking at/for?” We get asked this all too often. From that simple question came this exciting collaboration between Art & Wonderment and The Art Insider! Decoding Art is a series that presents Indian art history in a conversational, narrative format. By drawing connections between works on display in the gallery, we will unpack the thoughts and ideas behind seminal modern and contemporary Indian works of art and movements.
Taking a leap out of textbooks and traditional chronology, we want the conversation to swirl around the works in the room, building narratives, sharing histories and interpreting the art in ways that encourage personal exploration and discovery. This first session we look at the ongoing exhibition at Akara Art, weaving a story around the Indian Moderns and and how to read them!

At her suburban studio, Savia will walk us through some of her recent works and drawings, as well as a peek into a new experimental piece!

Art at (not just) a mall
21 Jan 2023 | BKC
On Saturday morning, 21 Jan, we're taking you to a place you might be familiar with, the Jio World Drive and Maker Maxity, to look closer (and maybe even see for the first time) and the stunning works of public art placed all around. Studio Visit: Vishwa Shroff
3 Dec 2022 | Colaba
If you've been on our art walks, you've heard us talk about Vishwa Shroff's work as we go down staircases, through old bazaars and point up at passing buildings! She's what they call an "urban forager", looking for fragments and scenes from cities she lived in to create works that are at once familiar and poignant. Her minutely observed drawings of flooring patterns in a single building or how people inhabit their living spaces remain our favourite works. Join us on this special tour, which begins with a visit to Vishwa's ongoing solo at TARQ and then heads to her studio space for a deeper look at her practice.

Art Gallery Hop
12 Nov 2022 | Ballard Estate
It's time to book your once-a-month fun, friendly, art gallery hop and - oh my goodness - do we have a treat for you!
Our walk begins Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke with stunning, evocative works by Aban Raza in her solo exhibition, There is Something Tremendous about the Blue Sky. We last saw Raza's work in a virtual exhibition during the lockdown and even just through a screen, she quickly became one of our favourite new artists! We're also so chuffed about this new mini art district that's found its home in Ballard Estate - from Mirchandani & Steinrucke we skip around the corner to Galerie Isa to see large, abstract works by German artist Gregor Hildebrandt, whose art practice is drenched equally in a passion for music.
Finally, we weave through a labyrinth of old city streets to end Chemould Prescott Road , giving the rest of our time to one of our all time art superheroes, the artist Pushpamala N. That's enough detail for now, we think!:)

AWM Platform | Ed. 2 | Shyamli Singbal
13 Oct 2022 | Zoom
We’re excited to announce that our second edition of Platform will showcase the work of Shyamli Singbal, an artist working with drawing and digital media, based in Panjim and Vadodara. We’ve reworked our format to focus on one artist per edition, allowing you, the viewer, to engage more intently with their practice.
Shyamli grew up in Panjim, Goa, before completing a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Painting (2017) from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, and a post-graduation in Fine Arts (2020) from Goldsmiths University of London.
Shyamli’s practice involves a close investigation of the worlds around her. Family and friends appear in ink and colour pencil as intimately observed portraits of the everyday. A fascination with form and found objects reveals itself in her sculptural and digital works. Most recently Shyamli is also developing a collaborative art making practice that includes zines, colouring books and exhibition making.

Join us next in midtown Mumbai for two exciting new shows followed by an extra special Bombay Sweet treat!

Afterward, we hop into taxis and cross over to Byculla and Nine Fish Art Gallery where Pablo Bartholomew's photography show, 'The Nagas', has been extended following a fantastic response. To end, we walk over to Byculla's very own Bombay Sweet Shop for a much needed break from the heat with a beverage, soft serve and an interactive tour of this incredible space and its stories! Trust us, this isn't one to miss!
